Behavioral Operations Management

My main research areas are Behavioral Health Care Operations, Behavioral Project Management as well as Behavioral aspects in the newsvendor context.

A problem of special interest in the field of behavioral operations management is the newsvendor problem, which addresses one of the fundamental questions of inventory management, how much to order. A behavioral aspect that we investigate is the influence of the assessment of costs on decision behavior.  Conducting experimental studies we compare the decision behavior in newsvendor problems with opportunity costs and problems with penalty costs. In another project we investigate the consequences of information seeking on human decision making in combination with the assessment of costs in situations with censored information.

The health care sector has very strong behavioral influences, which comes as no surprise since people are vital for health care services. While surgeons make both medical and management decisions, their behavior is typically discussed in the context of medical decision making, where surgeons' biased decision making is observed. We conducted an experimental investigation of surgery planning with experienced surgeons in hospitals and our findings demonstrate important biases in the health care context.

A key success factor in project management is the human decision maker. The phenomenon of projects taking longer than planned or getting more expensive than estimated is often related to human behavior. By studying behavioral biases and decision heuristics in project management the reasoning for these failures might be detected. A better understanding of the decision processes is important in order to develop, compare, and evaluate promising approaches in project scheduling and project selection. Behavioral decision rules and biases in a project portfolio selection are focus of a laboratory study that we conducted verifying sub optimization in portfolio decision making.
